Senator Menendez Found Guilty of Corruption and Bribery
A U.S. jury has convicted Senator Robert Menendez (D-N.J.) of all 16 counts related to accepting bribes from wealthy New Jersey businessmen. The charges include conspiracy to commit bribery and acting as a foreign agent. Menendez and his wife, Nadine, were accused of accepting bribes in the form of gold, cash, and a Mercedes-Benz in exchange for political favors. One instance involved using his influence to halt a criminal probe into a businessman and protect an Egyptian monopoly. Despite Menendez’s criticism of cryptocurrencies for their potential in financial crimes, his own illicit activities did not involve digital assets. Menendez could face up to 222 years in prison if sentenced consecutively. Calls for his resignation are mounting, and he may face expulsion from the Senate.
