Chlorine Gas Leak in Mysore Affects 37 People, Including a Toddler
In a distressing incident at Old Kesare in Mysore, 37 individuals, among them a toddler, were adversely affected due to a chlorine gas leak from a scrap shop named ‘Rida Steel Traders’. The incident unfolded last evening when workers attempted to crush chlorine gas cylinders, inadvertently causing the gas to leak.
The victims, who suffered from symptoms such as breathlessness, severe vomiting, and cough, were swiftly taken to various hospitals for treatment. While 26 have been discharged after receiving medical care, 11 remain hospitalized but are reported to be out of danger. The affected individuals were taken to K.R. Hospital, District Hospital in Metagalli, Nagarajegowda Hospital in Alanahalli, and Prajwal Hospital.
Among the victims is a one-and-a-half-year-old child named Diya, highlighting the indiscriminate impact of the incident. Other affected individuals include Prema (55), Bhavana (25), Pavan (8), and several others, showcasing the widespread nature of the gas leak’s effects.
The local community was plunged into anxiety as the gas quickly spread through the locality, affecting many unsuspecting residents near the scrap yard. Fire services personnel from Bannimantap Fire Station acted promptly to contain the leak, preventing a major accident.
Officials, including the Chief Fire Officer and the District Health Officer, have visited the site. They emphasized the dangers of handling gas cylinders recklessly in residential areas. City Police Commissioner B. Ramesh and his team have directed the filing of a case against the shop owner for negligence.
As the community recovers from this alarming event, authorities have stressed the importance of adhering to safety protocols to avert such incidents in the future.
